RADIO RALLY!
1PM-4PM Saturday November 16, 2019

A Road Rally and Scavenger Hunt using Ham Radio Brought to you by Jay & Liz McClellan, K8DC & K8DCL
Teams of 2 or 3 drive to checkpoints and compete to solve puzzles, find items and answer questions while communicating with a Net Control Station.

$100 cash prize will be awarded to a charity chosen by the winning team.

No experience? No radio? No license? No problem! Non-hams are welcome to team up with licensed operators and get on the air. Teams get a bonus for having any non-licensed person talk on the radio.
If you don’t have a team that’s fine, we’ll pair folks up before the event starts. Each team needs only a vehicle and a mobile or handheld radio. It’s not a race so any vehicle is fine and no special driving skills are needed.

Starting & Ending Location: 5475 Darby Rd, Saranac MI 48881
Snacks and refreshments will be served afterward.

Event repeater: WA8RRA 444.725MHz +, PL 94.8 Hz
To register or for more info, just email your name and call sign (if any) to K8DC@.... Walk-ins are welcome but by registering you’ll get updates and important details ahead of time.

Re: 2019 Park2Park 1/2 Marathon #events

Todd Boss W8YHF

Good morning everyone,

I shared some of this info at last week's club meeting, but wanted a take a minute to post it on the reflector for those that weren't able to be there.

First of all, Jen Roudebush (Neighbors Plus director) wanted me to let everyone know how much our involvement meant to her and the rest of the event organizers.  She really appreciated the real-time information that we were able to provide throughout both races.  She sent me a very nice thank-you card and also included a thank-you to Holland Amateur Radio Club in the most recent Neighbors Plus newsletter.  We should be very proud of our club and our effort at the event.  I certainly am.

Here are some event stats that I received from Jen:
  • We had 1,079 registered runners; 983 actually ran that day.
  • Approximately $35,000 was raised for Neighbors Plus.
  • Overall number of volunteers: approximately 130 (19 of them were from HARC!)
  • Winners:
    • Half-marathon (male): Isaiah Nobel with a time of 1:16:52
    • Half-marathon (female): Sarah Flowers with a time of 1:28.30
    • 5k (male): Jake Shavalier with a time of 17:37
    • 5k (female): Jana Shavalier with a time of 21:40

Again, I am extremely grateful to HARC and our ongoing involvement in this great event.  I'm looking forward to next year!

Thanks & 73,
Todd W8YHF

MFJ-1026 Noise Canceller

Jim Dolson

Does anyone have an MFJ-1026 that I could borrow for a day or two?

I’ve had to put up a fan dipole in the attic.  After much trimming, It’s resonant on 40/30/20 but the noise level is S7.  With all power to the house off it’s S2.  There is no one breaker that I can turn off to fix this (I spent an hour running up and down the stairs flipping breakers).

Before I drop $200 into a noise canceller I’d like to try it to see if it helps.

Thanks!

Jim

Thanks, Tom and Bob!

I was tied up for the rest of the weekend after the race, and haven't had a chance to draft my usual "thank you" email yet, but to everyone that participated this year, I am grateful for your support.  Neighbors Plus sincerely appreciates our involvement each year at the Park2Park race.  Great job, HARC!

Active Shooter. What Would You Do?

More sessions of the popular 'response to active shooter' course.  Though we hope you are never faced with the situation, would you know what to do in the case of an active shooter? Hide? Evacuate?

Doing the right things can increase your odds of getting through alive. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office's "Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events" class offers thought-provoking, eye-opening and engaging strategies, guidance, and plans for surviving an active shooter event. Since January of 2017, over 1300 Ottawa County residents have taken the course. There is no cost for the class, but registration is required and space is limited.

It seems the Winlink Gateway, K8OEC-14, is not working. Just FYI. The Digi MI7FIL works great though!

It was a good day indeed. I was assigned to the new race director, and she told me  in the early part of the race "You folks provide a lot of good information."   And later in the race she said "I  don't  know how we could run this race without you folks !"  She was very appreciative of our assistance.....  Great job by Nick and Keith in net control. Nice work everyone! Bob K8ABG.

Just a note to all of you who help for today's Park to Park race net.

It was very well done. From Todd's suburb organizational skills for this,

to Nick and Keith as net controls to those crazy Malberg kids on the bikes

and especially to the rest on the course, just a very well run net.

At my stop, the neighbors were a little puzzled listening in, as they
thought that those on the net were PD or firefighters!

They really enjoyed listening in to all the goings on.

Thank you all,

Tom K8TB

HOLLAND AMATEUR RADIO CLUB (HARC-K8DAA) will be providing radio communications, Saturday, September 28th for the Park2Park 1/2 marathon and 5K (http://www.park2parkrace.com/), which benefits Neighbors Plus (http://www.neighborsplus.org/), a nonprofit Christian community development organization based on the North side of Holland. This will be our fifth year assisting with this event.
Last year, with 19 operators using the 06 repeater (147.06+ PL 94.8Hz), we covered the aid stations and many navigation points along the entire course, along with three bicycle mobile operators.
Arrive at the fairgrounds by 7:30am on race day, will be needed until around noon. Plan to use of the 06 repeater again this year as it performs extremely well throughout the entire course (some locations require less than 1 watt TX power).
If you are interested in working this event or have any questions, email me at todd[at]w8yhf[dot]org. This is a great first event for new operators; if you are uncomfortable working solo, please let me know and I'll pair you with a more experienced operator. If you would like to work the event but can't stay until noon, I should be able to assign you to a station at the beginning of the course so that you can depart early.
This event benefits a great organization and provides good exposure for HARC in the community. Thanks to HARC for supporting this event. 73, Todd W8YHF

Hi Tom.

Is there a webpage that describes the use of packet in Ottawa county?

Best,

As of this afternoon, the BPQ Packet node Mi7FIL is fully operational on
the "Fillmore" tower located at the Ottawa County EOC.

It is tied into the 44.x.x.x network and talking to other BPQ nodes
there. The nodes Internet feed is fed by enterprise grade microwave.

The RF signal from the antenna at 110 feet is very good.

This is a hardened and power backed up site.

The digipeater is enabled to allow a single digi. Use Mi7FIL for the
digi call.

Tom K8TB

p.s., this site hears the GRARA W8DC node just fine, so the two sites
back each other up via RF.
